Life At Protiviti

Spearheading a Hackathon to Catalyze Client Success

Michael Jacobs

Senior Manager, Chicago

When Michael Jacobs joined Protiviti from the banking industry, he identified a unique opportunity. He realized that learning an additional programming language such as Python would enhance his colleagues' proficiency and add value to their financial services clients.

“By sharpening our teams’ abilities to extract data-driven insights, I knew we could do more to inform our clients’ decisions,” says Michael.

However, finding time amidst busy schedules was a challenge. His solution? A hackathon where participants could learn while solving real client problems related to cryptocurrency, sanctions screening, and transaction monitoring.

From Idea to Global Event

Michael approached Protiviti’s Head of Global Innovation with his idea. His proposal received immediate support setting into motion the creation of an event spanning across our global reach from Hong Kong to Germany to US and Brazil. Some even began applying their newly acquired skills to client projects immediately.

For instance, a hackathon team from Legal Consulting applied some newfound innovations discovered during the process to build multiple new solutions for a client. These solutions effectively reduced many days of manual work for the client. As a result of this efficiency, the client chose to engage our team for further assistance with its additional priorities. This illustrates the practical impact of innovation on helping our clients achieve operational efficiencies.

Building Connections Through Collaboration

The success of the hackathon reflects not only to Michael's creative vision but also Protiviti’s collaborative culture and leadership's open-door policy. Although the firm is a global organization, gaining reviews and approvals from senior leaders was straightforward due to their accessibility.

With plans underway for making it an annual event, Michael ponders: “Where else would you have the freedom to instantly gain global reach with a project?” His pride is evident as he reflects on how his initial idea—along with everyone's collective effort—has equipped colleagues with key skills that continue to benefit our clients.

By creating opportunities for peer-to-peer learning while delivering tangible benefits for clients, Michael's story exemplifies Life At Protiviti – ensuring we continue to deliver excellent service while fostering continuous growth and innovation among team members.
