When GENERATIONS meet: The productivity potential of multigenerational meetings

Why a survey on Generations?

At Protiviti, we recognise the immense value that generational diversity brings to organisations. Sponsored by Protiviti, The Inclusion Initiative (TII) at the London School of Economics (LSE) launched a preliminary study in January of 2024 to highlight the strategic importance of fostering collaboration across the five generations now present in many workplaces. The launch report, GENERATIONS: Unlocking the productivity potential of a multigenerational workforce, revealed that insufficient cooperation between different age groups can limit productivity, while promoting intergenerational inclusion can unlock greater performance and enhance the employee experience.

This latest report, When GENERATIONS Meet: The Productivity Potential of Multigenerational Meetings, marks the first annual publication in this ongoing research initiative. This report offers practical guidance for leaders on how to maximise productivity by leveraging the strengths of multigenerational teams, particularly in meetings. The aim of this research is to empower leaders to drive greater organisational success by harnessing the potential of a diverse workforce.

Our Preliminary Findings

Prior to the launch of the Generations Survey, The Inclusion Initiative embarked on preliminary research, drawing data from more than 1,450 employees in Finance, Technology and Professional Services Industries in the United States and the United Kingdom. The results of that research can be found in our initial report, GENERATIONS: Unlocking the Productivity Potential of a Multigenerational Workforce.

This report underscores a call to action for leaders to prioritise intergenerational inclusion by making it central to DEI and talent strategies. It shows that, despite the clear potential for productivity gains through intergenerationally-inclusive work practices, firms continue to miss out due to frictions between employees of different generations negatively impacting productivity.
